Glazed pottery is one of the most representative techniques of Mexico and has been adapted to all pottery techniques. It consists of glazing or varnishing applied to the piece of clay that acquires a crystalline layer. This glaze can be transparent or black, blue or green, the most characteristic colors of Mexican glazed pottery. From San José de Gracia come the famous Michoacan glazed pineapples, pots that were used to store water, decorated with small peaks or shells, which are placed one by one on the surface until they cover it completely and with a lid representing leaves. This pineapple is characterized by the complex and beautiful decoration with pastillaje technique, it is completely detailed by hand with applications modeled in the form of shells on the entire surface, the lid stands out for its spiked leaves in a green glaze. Glazed pottery in Mexico is one of the most representative throughout the country. Not all glazes are transparent and colorless, there is a great variety of colors that depend on the materials and firing treatments, when they are transparent we can look through them and see the clay paste, sometimes they are opaque and have the effect of a dark glass. The glaze consists of glazing or varnishing applied to the piece of clay, depending on their degree of complexity and size are made between 45 and 120 days requiring two firing sessions for the pieces to acquire the characteristic brightness of the glaze. The glaze is the most traditional pottery of the Sierra Tarasca, its pottery preserves much of the indigenous tradition, the Michoacan pineapple is one of the most special and beautiful creations within the pottery of all Mexico.
